What brought you to the Ryan Dungey Foundation?
I have been a longtime volunteer for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. As an athlete growing up, I’ve had an affinity for St. Jude’s fitness-focused events as they’ve always felt like home. After getting to know Ryan and working alongside him through leading his St. Jude event, we quickly developed a great friendship and realized our shared passion for doing more. Many of our conversations found their way to the dreams of other ways we could make an impact, which ultimately led us to where we are today with the foundation.
What’s your fondest memory aboard two wheels?
My fondest memory comes from the process of learning to ride my bike. The excitement and fear that turned into determination, goals, and pride is something I will never forget. I can vividly remember where I was at, what I was wearing, who was there, and how someday I was going to conquer the massive hill outside my childhood home. Now having nieces and nephews, when I watch them go through that same achievement that memory replays in my mind and I am filled with that same pride of them.
What inspires you the most about the opportunity to help children?
I am most excited for the opportunity to pay it forward by investing in organizations that take chances on children. Not only do I believe that children will show us what they are capable of if we give them an opportunity, but they will also teach us just as much along the way. I love the opportunity to be inspired by youth. In almost every instance when I’m with kids I am instantly reminded of the power in being creative, growing, and laughing.
Who has been an inspiration in your life?
I’ve always found inspiration in those around me. Everyone has a story, a fight, a passion, and a reason why. My parents instilled in my sisters and myself from an early age the fundamental value of giving back. It was always about sharing, caring, and helping others, whether at church, school, and wherever else we could find the opportunity. I have learned from them that how I help will differ in seasons of life, but that finding a way to be supportive, especially in places where I am passionate, is important to who I am.
